Abject Poverty

This year I feel poor,
Next year He’ll give more
O Lord, don’t abandon me
I’m in abject poverty!

To you I cry in pain
For sustenance and necessity
There is none other
That can alleviate my poverty

If God were to grant
Abundance to His servants
They would have transgressed
He bestows in measures as He wills!

He is the One who sends the rain
After they had despaired
He is the One that grows the grain
Revives the barren, lifeless earth.

They turn away in their self-sufficiency
They feel no need to call upon Thee
I have no place to go, no one to turn to
My only hope and refuge is You!

Material wealth and prosperity
Are trials and tribulations
Delusions of self-sufficiency
Are distractions from Reality

When the graves are cracked open
When the hearts are examined
When the deeds are weighed—
Nothing avails but the peaceful heart.

Through your mercy You created a need in me
An utmost dependency through my poverty
A humble servant, always waiting on You—
O Lord, provide all my necessities.

This year I feel poor,
Next year He’ll give more
O Lord, don’t abandon me
I’m in abject poverty!
