Eye of the Needle

“Inna alladheena kadhdhaboo bi-ayatina wastakbaroo ‘anha latufattahu lahum abwabus sama-i wala yadkhuloonal-jannata hatta yalijaal jamalu fee sammialkhiyati wa kadhalika najzeeal mujrimeen.”

To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin. (al-Qur’an 7:40)

“(Lo! they who deny Our revelations) Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Qur’an (and scorn them) scorn believing in them, (for them the gates of Heaven will not be opened) to receive their works or souls (nor will they enter the Garden until the camel goeth through the needle’s eye) they will not enter Paradise just as a camel cannot pass through the eye of a needle; it is also said that this means: they will not enter Paradise until a rope goes through a needle’s eye. (Thus do We requite the guilty) the idolaters.” (Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min TafsîrIbn ‘Abbâs, may Allah be pleased with him)

Those who deny Our signs and scorn them, not believing in them, indeed the gates of heaven shall not be opened for them, when their spirits are carried up to it after death, for instead they are taken down into Sijjin [cf. Q. 83:7f.] — in contrast to the believer, for whom the gates are opened, and his spirit is carried up into the seventh heaven, as is stated in one hadith — nor shall they enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of the needle, which is impossible, and so is their entry [into Paradise]. So, with this requital, We requite those who are sinful, through disbelief.” (Tafsir al-Jalalayn)

Waalladheena amanoo wa ‘amiloo alssalihati lanukallifu nafsan illa wus‘aha ola-ika as-habual jannati hum fee ha khalidoon.

“But those who believe and work righteousness,- no burden do We place on any soul, but that which it can bear,- they will be Companions of the Garden, therein to dwell” (al-Qur’an 7:42)

“And those who believe and perform righteous deeds (wa’lladhinaamanuwa-‘amilu’l-salihati is the subject) We do not charge any soul beyond its scope, its capacity for action (lanukallifunafsanillawus‘aha, ‘We do not charge any soul beyond its scope’, constitutes a parenthetical statement, intervening between it [the above subject] and its predicate, which is [the following]) those are the inhabitants of Paradise, abiding therein.” (Tafsir al-Jalalayn, 7:42)

Wanaza’na ma fee sudoorihim min ghillin tajree min tahtihimu al-anharuwaqaloo alhamdulillahi allathee hadana lihatha wamakunnalinahtadiyalawla an hadana Allahulaqad jaat rusulurabbinabialhaqqiwanoodoo an tilkumualjannatuoorithtumoohabimakuntumta’maloon. (al-Qur’an 7:43)

“And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury;- beneath them will be rivers flowing;- and they shall say: “Praise be to Allah, who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah: indeed it was the truth, that the messengers of our Lord brought unto us.” And they shall hear the cry: “Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds.” (al-Qur’an 7:43)

(And We remove whatever rancour) resentful envy or enmity (may be in their hearts) in the life of this world. (Rivers) of wine, water, honey and milk (flow beneath them) beneath their habitations and beds in the Hereafter. (And they say) when they reach their habitations; and it is said: when they reach the source of life: (The praise to Allah) gratitude and benevolence are Allah’s, (Who hath guided us to this) to this habitation and source. (We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us) to it; it is also said that when they see Allah’s favour when He bestowed faith upon them, they said: praise and thanks are due to Allah Who has guided us to the religion of Islam, and we would not have been guided to the religion of Islam had not Allah guided us to it. (Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth) they brought truth, glad tiding, reward and favour. (And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it) you were given it (for what ye used to do) and say of good things in the life of this world. (Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min TafsîrIbn ‘Abbâs, may Allah be pleased with him)

“His words, Exalted is He: We shall strip away all rancour that is in their breasts…He said: This refers to whims (ahwa’) and innovations (bida’).” (Tafsir al-Tustari)

“Wabaynahumahijabunwa’ala al-a’rafirijalunya’rifoonakullanbiseemahumwanadawas-habaaljannati an salamunA’alaykum lam yadkhuloohawahumyatma’oon” (al-Qur’an 7:46)

“Between them shall be a veil, and on the heights will be men who would know every one by his marks: they will call out to the Companions of the Garden, “peace on you”: they will not have entered, but they will have an assurance” (al-Qur’an 7:46)

“And between them, that is, [between] the inhabitants of Paradise and those of the Fire, is a veil, a barrier, said to be the wall of the Heights, and on the Heights, which is, the wall of Paradise, are men, whose good deeds and evil deeds are equal, as [is stated] in the hadith, who know each, of the inhabitants of Paradise and those of the Fire, by their mark — glowing faces in the case of the believers and blackened [ones] in the case of the disbelievers, for they are able to see them, their position being high — and they call to the inhabitants of Paradise: ‘Peace be upon you!’ God, exalted be He, says: They, that is, those men of the Heights, have not entered it, Paradise, although they aspire, to enter it. Al-Hasan [al-Basri] said, ‘God causes them to have this aspiration only because He desires to be generous to them’. Al-Hakim reported that Hudhayfa [b. al-Yaman] said, ‘While they are in this situation, God appears to them and says “Get up and enter Paradise, for I have forgiven you”.” (Tafsir al-Jalalayn, 7:46)

“The People of the Heights are the people of gnosis (ma’rifa). God, Exalted is He, said: …who know each by their mark [7:47].Their standing is due to the honour (sharaf) they enjoy in the two abodes and with the inhabitants of both, and the two angels know them. Likewise [God] enabled them to see into (ashrafahum) the secrets of His servants and their states in this world.”(Tafsir al-Tustari)
