The six cardinal vices

The six cardinal vices Man arafa nafsahu faqad arafa rabbahu, The one who knows himself knows his Lord, “Know thy self”, written on the Temple of Delphis; “Know thy limits O man” and “nothing too excess”,

The preferred way is the way of moderation. The seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Greed and Gluttony, Lust, Anger and Sloth are firewood for human virtues; Cultivate the fruits of the orchard but root out the weed first, The harvest will be ruined unless the plants are watered. Nothing grows on hardened stones neither water gashes forth, Only polished mirrors reflect lights and love attaches to tender hearts, Who saw with their eyes closed when rainbow displayed the seven colours?

Was ever the threat of thunder averted by putting fingers in the ears? by Motiur Rahman Selfhood and its individuation principle consist of the following six aspects in the higher animal species: Pride: “I shall turn away from My revelations those who show pride in the world wrongfully.” (al-Qur’an 7:146) Allah has said in another place in the Qur’an: “And in this way Allah does put a seal on every arrogant disdainful heart.” (40.35) “Is it that whenever there came to you a Messenger with what you yourselves desired not, you grew arrogant? Some, you disbelieved and some, you killed.” (2: 87) “Certainly He does not love the proud ones.” (16:23) “And your Lord said: “Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). Verily!

Those who scorn (yastakbiroon – Have kibr) My worship, they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!” [Surah Ghaafir: 60] From the ahadith: “Anyone who possesses half a mustard seed of Pride (kibr) in his heart will not be granted admission to Paradise.

And anyone who possesses half a mustard seed of Eemaan (faith) will not enter the (Eternal) Fire.” [Muslim] It is narrated that Hazrat Moosa (a.s) asked exalted Allah: “Oh my Lord! Who is the most deserving of your wrath and displeasure?” Allah Ta’aala told him: “It is he whose heart is filled with pride and his tongue is filthy (i.e. Abusive), his eyes are devoid of shame, his hands are miserly and he is of bad conduct and character.

He (SAW) was asked: “[But] O Messenger of Allaah! A man likes to have fine clothing and footwear. Is this included in Kibr?” He responded, “No. Allaah is Beauty and loves Beauty. Kibr is the rejection of truth (Batrul-Haqq) and condescension of others (waa ghaamtun-naas).” [Muslim] “Pride is My cloak and grandeur is my trousers.

If anyone disputes with Me in any one of these (two) I shall admit him into the Hell-fire.” Hadith al-Qudsi Greed: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Two qualities will never be joined in a believer: greed and bad manners.” (Hadith Bukhari and Tirmidhi) The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “…wealth is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and whoever takes it without greed, God will bless it for him, but whoever takes it with greed…will be like someone who eats but is never satisfied

The upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand.” Hadith reported by Abu Hurairah R.A: “Every morning two angels come down from the Heaven. One says, “O Allah! Reward all those who give in Your cause,” while the other says, “O Allah! Uproot every miser who withholds.” Envy and Jealousy: Zubair B ‘Awam RA. narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: “A sickness from the earlier nations has crept into your ranks: jealousy and hatred”. (Mishkat 2 Pg. 428) Hadith: “Verily, jealousy eats up your good deeds like fire eats up the wood” (Mishkat 46 pg. 248) It is mentioned that Iblees (Satan) once saw Noah and said to him: Be aware of jealousy; for jealousy is the thing that made me reach where I am today.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked, “Do you know who is a pauper?” The Sahaaba (RA) replied, ‘A pauper is he who does not have a Dirham or Dinar (no money) nor has he any wealth’. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “A pauper in my Ummah is he who comes on the day of Qiyaamat with Salah, Fast, Zakaah But has verbally abused someone, unjustly eaten another person’s wealth, hit someone, etc. (for such a person) his good deeds will be taken and given to the other person.

If that person’s good deeds are finished, then his sins will be laden upon him and will be put in the Hell Fire. (Mishkat 2 pg. 435) Sexual desire: On the authority of Abu Dharr R.A.: Some of the companions of the messenger of Allah said :” O Messenger of Allah, the affluent have made of with the rewards, they pray as we pray they fast as we fast, and they give away in charity the superfluity of their wealth.” He said:” Has not Allah made things for you to give away in charity ? every tasbihah is a charity, every takbirah is a charity, every tahmidah is a charity, and every tahlilah is a charity, to enjoin a good action is a charity, to forbid an evil action is a charity, and in the sexual act of each of you there is a charity.”

They said: “O Messenger of Allah, when one of us fulfils his sexual desire will he have some reward for that?” He said: “Do you not think that were he to act upon it unlawfully he would be sinning ? Likewise, if he has acted upon it lawfully he will have a reward.” – related by Muslim. “’Alqama R.A reported: While I was walking with ‘Abdullah at Mina, ‘Uthman happened to meet him. He stopped there and began to talk with him.

Uthman said to him: Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, should we not marry you to a young girl who may recall to you some of the past of your bygone days; thereupon he said: If you say so, Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes from casting (evil glances) and preserves one from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting for it is a means of controlling sexual desire.” Jabir reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) saw a woman, and so he came to his wife, Zainab, as she was tanning a leather and had sexual intercourse with her. He then went to his Companions and told them:

The woman advances and retires in the shape of a devil, so when one of you sees a woman, he should come to his wife, for that will repel what he feels in his heart. Anger: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The best of you are those who are slow to anger and swift to cool down.

Beware of anger, for it is a live coal on the heart of the descendants of Adam.” – (Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1331 ) “When one of you becomes angry while standing he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down.” (Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 5114 Narated By Abu Dharr R.A.) “The man is not a good wrestler; the strong man is in fact the person who controls himself at the time of anger.” (Hadith is stated in Bukhari) “A person should be cautious from being angry.” (Bukhari) It has been narrated by Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him) That Allah’s Messenger Muhammad ( saw) Said: “The strong is not the one who over comes the people by his strength.” “But the strong is the one who controls him while in anger.” In another narration by Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him man said to the Prophet Muhammad ( saw) Advise me. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Do not become angry. “The man asked the same question again and again and the Prophet Muhammad (saw) Replied by in case by saying: “Do not become angry and furious” Leadership and competition: The quest for excellence is an innate attribute of the self. I quote the part of the long Jibril hadith: He said, ‘Tell me about the Hour.’ He said, ‘The one asked about it knows no more than the one asking.’ He said, ‘Then tell me about its tokens.’ He said,

‘That the female slave should give birth to her mistress, and you see poor, naked, barefoot shepherds of sheep and goats competing in making tall buildings.’ He went away, and I remained some time. Then he asked, ‘Umar, do you know who the questioner was?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘He was Jibril who came to you to teach you your deen’.” (Muslim).
